Social Media Monitoring to Assess Corporate Threats

As police departments around the country monitor social media more aggressively as a result of the murder of two New York City police officers, public relations departments in corporations, government agencies, and major not-for-profits must now consider more wide-ranging media monitoring to identify and assess threats against their organizations. Timely monitoring of news and social media for threats of violence and other threatening activities enables organizations to identify problems and take swift preventive or corrective action. In addition to monitoring for public relations and reputation management issues, organizations are well-advised to monitor news and social media for overt threats of violence. Read More »

Quick Thought
Here's a quick tip of our hat to Burson-Marsteller and its Harold Burson Summer Internship Program (HBSI), a paid internship at one of the nine participating U.S. Burson-Marsteller offices. Each intern is assigned to a client team or practice group. HBSI interns are given the opportunity to gain valuable work experience as a team member. Colleagues from different specialty areas of Burson-Marsteller conduct seminars for interns each week. Interns are also grouped into teams where they work on a special HBSI project, which they present to a senior management panel for review at the conclusion of the internship. Burson-Marsteller's leadership commitment serves as a reminder to the entire PR community that:
  1. Internships should be an educational experience.
  2. All internships should be paid internships.

Apologies - or what are supposed to be apologies - have become part of our media landscape. With the numerous and widely published critiques of apologies, the act of apologizing sometimes draws more criticism than the original misstep. Poor apologies often cause more embarrassment and ill-will than the act that caused the apology. It's crucial to craft a sincere apology that shows genuine remorse and to take concrete action that will correct the problem. Read More »

Whats the Difference Between PR and Marketing?
Social media has blurred the boundaries between PR and marketing. Companies are distributing both press releases and marketing campaigns through social media networks. Both PR and marketing post commentary on social media to manage issues and crises. In many organizations, the functions and responsibilities of PR and marketing have become intertwined. It's often hard to tell where one ends and the other begins. As a result, cooperation and communication has become essential to mutual success. Read More »

How to Build Online Trust with Customers

Marketing is based on trust. Customers who don't trust a company won't click to open emails or website pages, and they certainly won't purchase its products. Customer trust is especially critical for ecommerce sites since news reports of massive data breaches have caused customers to become more cautious about providing personal and credit card information. Internet security is not just an IT issue. Building and maintaining customer trust requires a commitment from marketing, customer service and other departments. Read More »

Social Media Enthusiasts can Mislead Your Marketing
Vocal and quiet social media users differ from one another in ways that matter quite a lot to businesses. Therefore, relying solely on social media to analyze consumer sentiment can result in faulty data and flawed insights that can spoil future marketing campaigns.
