CyberAlert: Nobody Monitors and Measures the Media Better
left edge left margin June 2012: Issue 4
spacer
Ah, the trials and tribulations of a newsletter editor. After having used Word 2000 for more than a decade, this is the first issue of Media Monitoring News that I've assembled using Word 2010. The level of frustration was, well, frustrating - just learning where all the selection points are located in the new software which has essentially the same functions but a totally different interface. As a result, this required more than three times as long to assemble as normal.

Wrestling with Word wasn't the only reason for fewer articles. I had saved maybe 60 articles this week as "interesting." Maybe it was the Word-induced frustration, but when I reviewed them for inclusion, most just didn't seem all that worthwhile.

The issue features a series of articles from Bulldog Report on media monitoring and measurement - the most comprehensive set of articles published this year on media monitoring and well worth your attention. There's also an extended white paper on do-it-yourself monitoring of social media in 15-minutes…and another on how to do it in 10 minutes a day. While the promise is akin to ads promising you can lose 60 pounds in a month, the recommendations are sound - and the papers include other worthwhile tidbits including a list of ways to better use media monitoring.

Bulldog Reporter's 2012 PR Measurement and Monitoring Software Buyer's Guide

spacer
Bulldog Reporter's 2012 PR Measurement and Monitoring Software Buyer's Guide consists of five chapters, which were published between June 4 and June 14. The articles offer a thorough, if idiosyncratic, analysis of current media monitoring and measurement methodologies. It seems, however, that the "head to head comparison" of vendors in the final chapter was limited to advertisers in Bulldog Reporter and therefore does not include leading monitoring and measurement solutions such as CyberAlert, Custom Scoop, Carma, Visible Technologies (formerly Cymfony), Netbase, Symscio and others. Below are the links to each of the chapters.

Chapter I: "Before You Start Shopping: How to Make Sense of the Explosion of PR Monitoring and Measurement Tools"

Chapter II: "New Developments In Media Monitoring and Measurement Over the Last 18 Months"

Chapter III: "What Are Your Monitoring and Measurement Needs and How Do They Match with Today's Capabilities?"

Chapter IV: "Questions to Ask Yourself: How to Assess Your Practices, Needs and Budget and Match Them to Leading Software Tools"

Chapter V: Head-to-Head Comparisons of Today's Leading PR Measurement and Monitoring Software Solutions

Social Media Monitoring in 15 Minutes

Murray Newlands (Influence People)
spacer
Social Media Monitoring in 15 Minutes - a 14-page white paper - claims to teach PR and marketing folks how to monitor social media in 15 minutes per day using free online monitoring tools. And the paper does indeed lay out a rational methodology. It would probably take less than 30 minutes per day to aggregate all the information for one corporate or brand name. But saving results, sorting, analyzing - all that takes additional time. Paid subscription services perform all those tasks - and more - automatically and clearly the most time-efficient way to monitor news and social media. Even if you have no interest in do-it-yourself media monitoring, the white paper is worthwhile for its list of 10 applications or uses for media monitoring including competitive intelligence, lead generation, and blogger outreach. If you want to complete your social media monitoring even faster, Hubspot offers How to Monitor Your Social Media Presence in 10 Minutes Day. It's a well-conceived guide for do-it-yourself media monitoring that covers what to monitor and how to streamline the d-i-y process. To its credit, the white paper concedes that subscription media monitoring services include features that save time and provide greater insight than the f.r.e.e. online media monitoring tools.

Twitter Content Strategy Guide

Social Media Sun spacer
Twitter has become an integral part of most social media and content marketing strategies. How best can you optimize your presence on Twitter for PR and marketing and how can you create an impact with 140 characters? Twitter Content Strategy Guide discusses both strategy and each type of content in detail with recommendations on how best to deploy each type of content including the role and limits of humor. The most common strategy: publish high quality content to position yourself as a go-to industry expert. For more on the subject, check out How to Optimize Tweets in Brand Channel explaining the four factors that predict the popularity of any given tweet. Hint #1: establish credibility. Hint #2: borrow credibility.

The 30 Best Content Curation Sources for Marketers and Business Pros

B2B Marketing Insider spacer
Cision last week issued a list of the Top 50 PR & Marketing Blogs, but here's something even better. The 30 Best Content Curation Sources for Marketers and Business Pros is a superb "reading list" if your goal is to keep current with PR, marketing and business issues - though admittedly the list does skew to the marketing site. Add in your two favorite PR pubs and you'll be a well-informed communications pro. Secret revealed: I receive email alerts or RSS feeds and review 26 of the 30 publications in order to select articles for Media Monitoring News. Not on my list: Time, Content Marketing Institute, The Nielsen Wire, and Business Innovation. Two to add that I review daily: Wall Street Journal and Ragan's PR Report. One I'll check out: The Week.

If you're not a bean counter (who in PR really is?), you'll love the anti-evaluation slant of Evaluating Social Media? Try Working Out the Value of a Kiss.
