Earned Media Measurement for PR: Evolution, Current Practice and Coming Innovations
This in-depth article examines how PR measurement has evolved, current best practices, and innovations in the pipeline. Monitoring and measurement of earned media has evolved from counting clips from a few hundred print publications to online monitoring and measurement with advanced software that captures, indexes and queries tens of thousands of online publications and millions of social media posts each day - and then display results in a fully-integrated online database and dashboard. Current best practices emphasize both quantitative and qualitative assessment of all earned media against business goals. Innovations in the pipeline include complete customization of measurement results to each customer's specifications. Read More »

Wikipedia Editing Guidelines - The Role of PR
As a free online encyclopedia and a highly-ranked resource in most Google search results, Wikipedia is a primary tool for information research on companies - and therefore an important PR target. Wikipedia crowd-sources its information, but zealously guards against conflicts of interest among its editors in order to assure accurate and unbiased information. Failing to comply strictly with the editing guidelines - especially disclosure of conflicts — can get you into deep trouble with the Wikipedia police, er, editors and administrators. The role of PR on Wikipedia is "information submission," not editing. Read More »

Top 12 Reasons NOT to Produce Podcasts for Marketing & PR
Photo credit: The Podcave via Wikimedia Commons
Many articles extol the virtues of podcasting for marketing and PR. But there are many sound reasons (pun intended) why businesses and non-profit organizations should think twice about producing podcasts for marketing and PR. The vast majority of people (83%) rarely if ever listen to business podcasts. The basic complaint is that podcasts require too much time and deliver too little information or insight. Many podcasts are badly produced with hosts who don't have the skills to moderate a radio program and podcasts can't be scanned to determine if the information in them is worthwhile. Read More »

Unpaid Internships: Worthwhile Educational Experience or Exploitation?
Photo credit: Michael O Leavitt Center for Politics
Despite many high-profile court settlements penalizing companies that did not pay interns, many organizations may not be getting the message that interns must be paid at least a minimum wage in almost all cases. To use unpaid interns, employers much meet a rigorous six-part set of criteria issued by the Department of Labor. Few intern programs meet all the criteria. Organizations that fail to meet Department of Labor employment standards for unpaid internships leave themselves open to lawsuits and resulting public relations damage.
Important Update: The New York Times reported on July 3 that a federal appeals court set aside a lower court decision against Fox Searchlight Pictures concerning unpaid interns. The appeals court decision gives employers more leeway to use unpaid interns legally. http://nyti.ms/1CPUpNW
